Liam Watson sets title target for AFC Telford
AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson believes a 100 per cent record between now and the end of the season will clinch the title.
The Bucks made it nine games unbeaten in the Skrill Conference North and five wins in a row with Saturday's hard-fought 3-2 victory at home to Histon.
It's still only enough for second place, a point behind league leaders North Ferriby United, but the Telford boss is confident the Villagers will drop points.
And Watson is keen for his side to take full advantage if that comes to pass, although he still believes there's slight room for error with nine fixtures left to play.
He said: "People talk about championship run-ins but you don't really reach that until the last five or six games, that's when it becomes no mistake territory.
"Our players have scored in every away game, we would like to keep that up. We went through February unbeaten, let's see if we can do that this month.
"Then we go into April and tonight is one of only two Tuesday training sessions we have left for this season, due to the midweek games we have next month.
"From North Ferriby's point of view, when we went there in January it looked like they had the league won, but we have managed to claw back nine points.
"We are concentrating on ourselves but if we win every game between now and the end of the season, I think we would win the league."
Watson and his players will be back on the training field tonight addressing the Histon success which, while yielding three points, was far from their best display.
The team's strength at set pieces, particularly with first-half goals from Mike Grogan and Mike Phenix, made the difference and the Bucks chief agrees it got them off the hook.
He said: "I never saw that coming, from the last 16 games we have 12 wins, two draws and a defeat and played nowhere near as bad as that.
"On another day, we could have seriously lost the game but, when you put it into perspective, we had an off day and got away with a win.
"People will say set pieces won it for us, but I think we have troubled every team we have played in that way."
