AFC Telford's away-day formula set for home
AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson may bring his 3-5-2 formation back to the New Bucks Head for the first-ever visit of Oxford City on Saturday.
Watson is considering changes after the weekend's 3-2 win at home to Histon which, although a victory, left the Telford boss far from pleased.
His abject side laboured to the three points that kept up the pressure on Skrill Conference North league leaders North Ferriby United, who remain a point ahead.
The two teams renew rivalries on Saturday with the Bucks chief pondering whether to bring Dan Preston, left out of the Histon squad, back to partner Neill Byrne and captain Simon Grand.
Telford would be playing with three central defenders on home turf for only the second time this season and the first since September, although it has been a feature away from home.
Watson said: "People ask me why we play with three centre-halves sometimes and you saw the reason on Saturday. In hindsight, I picked the wrong side.
"People have been banging on the door wondering why they are not starting. After that, there's a few who won't be banging anymore."
Watson is taking the three points from Saturday and moving on, hoping his players will produce better with another home game this weekend.
He said: "It's done, another win chalked off but it felt more like a defeat, to be honest. What's gone is gone, if we had won 5-0 it still would have been gone.
"The only word of any importance is win and I have been down this road many times, you are not going to play silky football with the situation we are in.
"Saturday wasn't good enough by a long way, but we got over the line and we need to stick together. There are four home games left and if we have to grind out results, so be it."
Watson watched on as Grand and midfielder Charlie Barnett had an on-field row, while benches later clashed with substitute Alan Moogan booked for a spat with Histon manager Brian Page.
Watson said: "If it's any consolation, I thought Charlie was right. 'Grandy' should have been stepping in and picking things up.
"He was saying he wasn't staying with his man, but it's hard for Charlie when it's five against two. It's easy for centre-halves to sit at the back, thinking they have done enough.
"I expect more from the pair of them, really, with the experience they have got."
Page apologised to Watson for his role in the Moogan fracas, saying: "I will put this on record that I apologise to Liam, as I was a little bit unprofessional in the way I acted towards him.
"I shouldn't have had a go at him like I did. Their bench has then jumped up and it's all got a bit silly. I am a better man than that."
