AFC Telford's Tony Gray is backed to hit form
AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson today backed out-of-favour striker Tony Gray to play a big part in the club's final 10 games of the season.
The Bucks forward has had to settle for a place on the bench due to the form of Andy Owens, who scored twice last weekend at Stalybridge Celtic.
Gray has been unable to get his starting spot back since dropping out of the squad before the 1-1 draw at Altrincham six games ago, then suffering illness.
The 29-year-old has played a cameo role, figuring for the last seven minutes at Stalybridge, and will get the chance to add to his seven goals so far this season.
Watson said: "Tony came on and looked sharp last weekend, but I would back him to come through for us in the run-in. He's had a stop-start season.
"I kept my faith in Andy Owens to the hilt all season and said that he would come good in the end, the same applies to Tony."
Winger Sean Clancy is set to start his third game in succession against Histon at the New Bucks Head tomorrow, having spent a spell on the sidelines.
The Bucks are back to chasing Skrill Conference North league leaders North Ferriby United, who ended 17 days at the summit for Watson's side in midweek.
A full-strength Telford squad had no place for midfielders Russell Benjamin and Charlie Barnett last weekend, with player-coach Alan Moogan used from the bench.
Watson said: "The big thing for Sean is that he has come in and played back-to-back games. Having been in and out of the side, it could have taken its toll.
"We want players to stick with us, whether they are in the team, on the bench or out of the squad. They are all still involved with the group.
"The likes of Russell fell out of the team because he was ill and 'Moogs' became available, it was really important to get him some game time.
"I explained that to Charlie Barnett on Saturday, it made sense to give him a rest because I needed to get some minutes into Alan."
