Liam Watson ready for more twists in title race
AFC Telford United boss Liam Watson remained defiant despite seeing his side knocked off the top of the Skrill Conference North without kicking a ball.
The Bucks could only watch on last night as second-placed North Ferriby United returned to the summit with an emphatic 4-1 victory at Gainsborough Trinity.
The Villagers seized the initiative by cashing in their game in hand and now lead the title race going into the weekend, where they entertain Worcester City.
Telford welcome financially-stricken Histon to the New Bucks Head determined to keep up the pace and Watson, the most successful manager with two titles in the league's history, is unfazed.
He saw his team snatch a 2-2 draw when their rivals where runaway league leaders at the end of January and warns there will be plenty of twists and turns yet.
He said: "They were originally due to play Gainsborough the game after they last played us in January – and that was to go 10 points clear.
"We have made up an awful lot of ground. Every game between now and the end of the season won't be an easy game for either of us.
"Everyone always wants to beat the top sides and that's what we are now. There won't be anyone rolling over.
"Other clubs are fighting for their own reasons, whether it's the play-offs or to avoid relegation. They have their own aims."
Telford will be assessing the fitness of on-loan winger Shaun Whalley as the week progresses after the borrowed Luton Town wide-man was replaced in the weekend's 2-0 win at Stalybridge Celtic.
The 26-year-old is being treated back at his parent club day-to-day, as Watson sticks by the phone with the Histon game in mind.
But the Bucks boss is considering alternatives should Whalley not make it, with fit-after-illness Robbie Booth the most obvious replacement.
Watson said: "Shaun has got a slight little strain so he may be touch and go for the weekend, but I am not overly concerned. He is being monitored back at Luton.
"Should he not make it, we have Sean Clancy, Mike Phenix and Robbie Booth who are all fit, so I won't lose any sleep over finding a replacement."
