AFC Telford don't feel the pressure at the top
AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson today insisted his players will feel no added pressure after climbing to the top of the Skrill Conference North.
The Bucks are sitting pretty at the summit for only the second time this season and are on course for an instant return to the Conference Premier.
Watson's side will look to keep up the pace at home to Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday, while the chasing pack look to make up the lost ground.
A two-point lead doesn't leave much room for error, but Watson insists it's par for the course when involved with one of the league's big-hitters.
He said: "It doesn't really bother me, in terms of being shot at. You play for or manage Telford and you are there to be shot at, anyway, because of the size of the club.
"People run out at the New Bucks Head and want to beat us. But, if we keep working as hard as we have been, results will come."
After leading Telford into first place with a 4-2 win at Vauxhall Motors, Watson was stunned to hear league rivals Gloucester City had sacked manager David Mehew.
The former Bristol Rovers midfielder was relieved of his duties after seven years in charge of the Tigers, after a 1-1 draw at home to high-flying North Ferriby United.
The result allowed the Bucks to go top but Watson was surprised to hear mate Mehew had left directly afterwards, although sources suggest the decision was made before the game.
Watson said: "As far as I am aware, Dave was sacked. The one thing Gloucester will learn from that is how popular Dave Mehew is to opposition managers.
"He's a very gracious, footballing person who had a great playing career and went on to become a good manager at this level, in his own right.
"Over the seven years he has been in charge, he's done an amazing job at that football club, considering they lost their ground during that time.
"He's a top bloke, 'Boris' is, and for him to be let go after he's just got a result against the then-league leaders is surprising. It was very sad to hear.
"Clubs changing their manager in that area could certainly do far worse than look at him."
