Ryan Young aiming to put the record straight
AFC Telford United goalkeeper Ryan Young is the sole remaining member of the last Bucks team to play at Vauxhall Motors – and he lasted 13 minutes!
Rob Smith's side were just settling into the game at Rivacre Park on August 17, 2010, the first away trip of the season, when they were reduced to 10 men.
Young had raced out of the area to beat Motors striker Obi Anorou to the ball but the linesman, who was flagging furiously, ruled he had handled outside the box.
Off went Young and on came Daniel Platt, who kept the home side out as the 10-man Bucks ground out a gutsy 1-0 victory, through Andy Brown's 32nd-minute strike.
Young said: "I got sent off that day for a hand-ball outside the box which was very debatable, but that was the decision and I had to live with it. I wasn't too impressed!
"It was the linesman that actually made the call but I still believe it wasn't outside the box. I was perhaps on the line but that was about as far as I had moved.
"It was never intentional, either, and I wasn't denying a goalscoring opportunity. I don't really understand why they did it, but I guess that's all done and dusted now.
"Daniel Platt came on and did well when I went off and we won there, he did really well. It saved my blushes, probably, but these things happen as a goalkeeper.
"All we try to do is our jobs and win the ball but, sometimes, you give a penalty away. That's enough punishment without the referee sending you off for it. To me, that's a farce.
"I have had one other red card playing for Telford, which was in an FA Trophy game against Darlington. It's not a bad record in nearly 10 years."
The 34-year-old is now targeting a clean sheet – and playing the full 90 minutes – on his return to the Motormen, for what be the third straight shut-out by Liam Watson's side.
The second-placed Bucks trail league leaders North Ferriby United by one goal going into play, four weeks after keeping the gap at seven points with a 2-2 draw at the Villagers.
Young said: "It's another game and I just want to go there and keep a clean sheet. We have two coming into Saturday. The lads look like they have got the bit between their teeth.
"We are up there and knocking on North Ferriby's door, so let's hope we keep it up. It's been a big swing-around since we went to their place, now we are level with them.
"The manager told us the other night that three weeks is a long time in football, they could have gone 10 points clear of us. They have a game in hand now, but we are there.
"We have got a team full of players who have been there and done it, so we will wait and see. We are looking good."
Young has played his part in the clean sheets of the last two games, with fine parries against Stockport County's Mark Lees and Worcester City's Anton Brown.
He said: "We win, lose and keep clean sheets as a team. I am there to do what I can.
"At Worcester, it was the least of my worries where I was pushing the ball, I just wanted to make the stop. It dropped to a guy who wasn't ready and, ultimately, missed.
"When I made the parry against Stockport, there were two players on the line. I may not have been the only one who could have kept it out."
