Mike Grogan on goal trail for AFC Telford
AFC Telford United's defensive midfielder Mike Grogan is a top-10 hit as he lines up at Oxford City after striking again at Altrincham in midweek.
Tomorrow's Skrill Conference North hosts should take heed of the Bucks' midfield enforcer, who is in double figures for the season after a goal at Alty.
That's despite his deep-lying position just in front of the back-line and the fact he didn't arrive until the seventh game of the season, signing in mid-September.
The 24-year-old was an unknown plucked from two leagues below at Cammell Laird, but has started every single match he's been available for since his debut.
He broke his duck at home to Stalybridge Celtic in November, with two apiece in back-to-back games against Scarborough Athletic and Barrow later that month.
Then came a lull before another double at Hednesford Town on Boxing Day, before a goal away to Harrogate Town last month. February is also proving fruitful.
He netted the opener when Guiseley came to town last weekend and repeated the trick on Tuesday at Moss Lane. Telford have never lost when he has notched, either.
He's been christened 'Goal Machine Grogan' by his team-mates and his exploits in the opposition box has left top scorer Adam Farrell, on 11, sweating!
Grogan said: "It's 10 goals now for me and I take them as they come, I wanted to try and get double figures and I have managed to do that, which is nice.
"I was saying to the lads the other week, when I was on eight goals, that if you had told me I would get 10 for the season when I first come, I would have taken it.
"The gaffer told me then he wanted me to get in the box and get on the end of things, I just want to do that whenever I can get forward from midfield.
"I am loving it here and scoring goals, which makes it even better. I am starting to believe I belong at this level and I just want to do well.
"I am not sure how many I can get, I will just keep going and see what happens. I am happy with 10, but I hope I can get more for the team."
The Alty draw preserved a record that is a double-edged sword for fourth-placed Telford, as they battle return to the Conference Premier.
They have travelled to all of the teams currently occupying a promotion place and avoided defeat on each occasion, but only recorded draws.
Their one loss in the last 10 games came at home to mid-table Barrow, with Grogan warning application will be key at third-bottom City.
He said: "We have been away to all the sides near the top and drew, but we have been winning at home. We have got four points against most of them.
"We are capable of going unbeaten for the rest of the season but, with no disrespect to who we have played, we have lost games against lesser teams.
"We feel we can do better against those sides and, against those around us, we haven't really lost. We are not really scared of anyone in this league.
"Perhaps we become a bit complacent sometimes against other teams but, hopefully, we can correct that and put some more points on the board."
Grogan believes Telford's style of play leads to most of his goals, pointing to Alty as the perfect instance, even if his slip played a part in the equaliser.
He said: "With the way we play, quite direct with the long throws and corners into the box, I score goals because of the good deliveries from either side.
"We play zonal football and, at Altrincham, I was standing on the edge of the box and there was no-one picking me up.
"It was a great ball in from Shaun Whalley and I shouted for it, a couple of the lads got out of the way and I got my head on it.
"Their equaliser was disappointing. When we make a mistake, other teams seem to pounce on it, but we haven't always when the opposition do the same.
"It came over the top and I have tried to stretch to head the ball and haven't got there. I think it was Russell Benjamin who was just behind me, at the time."
