AFC Telford hoping to keep Shaun Whalley
AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson today hinted he hopes to keep loan star Shaun Whalley at the New Bucks Head until the end of the season.
Whalley scored a fine solo goal in Saturday's 4-2 Skrill Conference North victory at home to Guiseley on his home debut, his second start for the club.
The 26-year-old has been borrowed from Conference Premier league leaders Luton Town and the Hatters' success may leave him surplus to requirements.
As it stands, the wide-man is due to spend another five games with the Bucks before heading back to Kenilworth Road.
Boss Liam Watson said: "He will enjoy it being here. He's a great lad and is so popular. He's a special player, too. The goal on Saturday was just one of individual quality.
"I hope we can keep him until the end of the season. It's probably been a tough time for him at Luton, just playing in the FA Trophy and so on.
"He knew that coming here would get the best out of him, as he's someone who will always give his all. You get some loan players who come in and think they are doing you a favour."
"He will go back to Luton in a good frame of mind and they will get a top player back. I just hope that, when he does go back, they are in the Football League."
Watson took the hard-line approach with Andy Owens on Saturday, leaving out the striker as he claimed he hadn't trained hard enough last week.
Winger Robbie Booth took his place on the bench while another substitute, Mike Phenix, scored one and made another as Telford battled to three points.
Watson said: "One got left out on Saturday because he didn't train hard enough, he ended up not being in the 16. Then you have got the likes of Mike Phenix, who you know will always put a shift in."
The Telford boss will assess the fitness of top scorer Adam Farrell today, with the forward replaced by Phenix in the second-half on Saturday after picking up a knee injury.
Watson said: "It was just a bang, it's more like a dead leg than anything. It was a knock rather than a twist or pull."
