Pressure is on as AFC Telford target top spot

AFC Telford United boss Liam Watson admits the New Bucks Head could be a pressure cooker for his players in the Skrill Conference North tomorrow.

Victory at home to Hednesford Town on New Year's Day could launch Liam Watson's second-placed Bucks to the summit for the first time this season.

Saturday's 2-1 win over visiting Boston United was their sixth success in eight games, with the Boxing Day draw at Hednesford and a home defeat to Leamington on the way.

Watson said: "It's great to see Telford up near the top, but I want to see us right at the very top come the last day of the season.

"We have got a great opportunity of promotion, with where we are, at the halfway stage of the campaign but we not even on target, as yet.

"If you need two points a game to go up, we are still a point off that and it's a big occasion here tomorrow. Every single game is a massive game now.

"We take every game as it comes but, with the three over Christmas and three straight away trips after, I would have taken a 10-point haul, purely because of the teams we were playing.

"We already have seven and that point at Hednesford on Boxing Day seems like a good one now, although I was disappointed because I thought we dropped two.

"There was pressure on them then, but there's none when they come here. We are above them now, so maybe it's on us and on Solihull Moors at the top."

Despite a decent run of form, Watson hasn't been wholly pleased with the performance of his players, particularly in the last two games.

The Bucks boss is considering signings next month, saying: "If I go around kidding myself then, towards the end of the season, it's too late to do something about the frailties I am seeing now.

"We have got to perform at a higher level and, if we need a couple of fresh faces to do that, so be it. I am always looking at how to improve the squad.

"If I can move people out and replace them with better players, I will do it. The one thing people always labelled at me is the loyalty I show to my players, but everyone has a sell by date.

"I haven't got a problem with saying to someone 'listen, I have found someone better, I am moving you on but I will do my best to find you another club.' The most important thing is the football."
