AFC Telford boss weighs up January swoops
AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson is considering bringing new recruits to the club next month to ensure there's no room for error.
The Bucks' saw the good, the bad and the ugly from his players in yesterday's 3-3 draw at league leaders Hednesford Town.
Telford twice came from behind to earn a point for their Skrill Conference North promotion push, where they have climbed to third.
An error-strewn display from both sides led to a high-scoring rate and chances were missed, too, for what also could have been a victory at 2-1 up.
It left Watson wondering whether signings will be needed to sustain his third-placed Bucks' team at the top, with defence and attack in mind.
He said: "You look at a display like that and it's whether I look at it and think about whether we have got enough to last us between now and the end of the season.
"Let's talk about that next month, particularly if we have got a fabulous chance of promotion. If that's the case, we should go all out to try and strengthen.
"There are people in the squad who I would let go for that, so I could perhaps use their wages, if there are better players available than they have proved to be.
"Maybe there are some players who would have looked at us in the summer who might do in January, with the position that we are in. It's something we will assess as we go along."
Telford have now played first and third in successive games without defeat after last weekend's 2-1 win over Brackley Town, where they also led after going behind.
Watson said: "If someone had offered me a point before the game, I would have taken it, but I have come away feeling flat and disappointed.
"Put it into perspective and perhaps we would be delirious with this result alongside the Brackley win, but we have probably been the architects of our own downfall, in terms of dropping points."
Super-sub Mike Phenix returned to the squad after four games out with a stomach complaint and got the all-important second equaliser, the fourth goal he has claimed from the bench this season.
Watson said: "I have told him there are parts of his game that he needs to improve on and he's promised me he will try. He's a good and honest kid. I thought he looked lively when he came on."
