Boss delighted by AFC Telford's character

AFC Telford boss Liam Watson praised the "immense character" of his side after they battled to three points in the "worst conditions I have ever come across."

Heavy rain and gale force winds battered Borough Park before, during and after the game at Workington.

Telford won 1-0 through Russell Benjamin's first competitive goal for the club and they defended the lead for 74 minutes.

Watson admitted he hadn't seen anything like the weather they encountered in Cumbria on Saturday during 25 years as a manager and player.

The Bucks chief watched his team fight both the hosts and the elements, determined not to let anything stop them picking up their first win in four games.

Watson said: "I told the lads after the game that they were the worst conditions I have ever, ever come across. For us to come away with a win and a clean sheet was immense.

"What I want to talk about is the character we showed, we needed to win desperately and the work rate we put in was phenomenal. A performance like that shows you we have proper team spirit."

Workington counterpart Gavin Skelton echoed Watson's sentiments about the weather and even hinted he thought the game should have been abandoned.

Skelton said: "The conditions were absolutely terrible, how either team managed to put a game on in that is unbelievable.

"I said to the linesman, at one stage, 'people have paid money to be here, what kind of entertainment is this for them?"

Transfer-listed winger Sean Cooke did not travel with the squad, having been put up for sale by Watson before they made the trip.

Midfielder Martyn Jackson was in the stands, having recently returned from a loan spell at Evo-Stik Northern Premier League side Skelmersdale United.

Winger Mike Phenix is still resting up after collapsing at work, but is on the mend and actively supported his team-mates on Twitter throughout the game.
