AFC Telford close to Liam Watson's target

AFC Telford United manager Liam Watson has told his side they are one win away from matching his promotion target of two points a game.

Watson's side won 3-0 at Barrow on Saturday but are not due back in league action until December 7, at home to Leamington.

They go to Worcester City in the FA Trophy first round at the weekend. Victory at Barrow left Telford sixth in the Skrill Conference North, with 31 points from 16 games.

They have put a hat-trick of league victories together and a fourth will do the trick for Watson.

He said: "With a win in the next league game, we will be on track. Leamington will be that chance to get three points and get us to the two-a-game target we have been looking for.

"If you can then maintain that towards the end of January, you have got a hell of a chance of going on to win promotion.

"The simple fact is I have been up and down this ride before and I know where we need to be at for certain periods.

"I look at December and January as really tough, so we just need to get through that with the target in mind. We just need to keep on winning football matches."

Watson was not impressed by his side's display despite the comprehensive score-line against Barrow, feeling his side had taken three points without being at the races.

He said: "It was a good result, but not a good performance. It was as poor as we have played for a good while. If we perform like that against the better teams, I think we could be easily turned over."

Mike Grogan scored twice at Holker Street to make it five from his last four games, while Tony Gray made it set-piece goals in successive games with a stoppage time free-kick.

Watson added: "I said when Mike signed he's got goals in him, but I think they covered over the cracks of his performance. He was nowhere near the standards he has set himself.

"But it's nice he's got a couple of goals and helped us out. It's nice that Tony got the third, too. Hopefully, he will carry on and go on a bit of a run now."
