Steve Hodge is linked with AFC Telford manager's job
Former England and Nottingham Forest midfielder Steve Hodge is the latest to be linked with AFC Telford's managerial vacancy.
The 50-year-old has kept a low profile since retiring at Leyton Orient in 1998, but he has done some recent coaching work at Chesterfield.
Hodge's other teams included Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and Queens Park Rangers.
He was capped 24 times by England and played in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico including the infamous Maradona "Hand of God" game against Argentina.
Hodge swapped shirts with the Argentine superstar at the end of the match and still cherishes the item today.
But while Hodge has joined the list of potential canidates, ex-Telford boss Rob Smith today stressed he was not planning on making a return.
The current Hednesford manager, who was at the helm in Shropshire from 2006 to 2010, says he has had no contact with his former club folowing rumours of a possible comeback.
"I've not spoken to anyone at Telford. I'm contracted to Hednesford and I'm more than happy," said Smith.
Worcester's Carl Heeley and ex-Hyde boss Gary Lowe are understood to be among the potential contenders. But Dean Wilkin, boss of tomorrow's visitors Nuneaton Town, has said he has not applied.
Meanwhile, Michael Briscoe today stressed his determination to enhance his claims for a new contract at AFC Telford in the final weeks of the season.
The experienced centre-half has only recently re-emerged after a six-month injury lay-off and admits he will have his work cut out convincing a new manager he is worth a new deal.
"I have got to keep myself fit, hopefully push on and get a contract for next season. If you haven't played all season what manager would want to take you on? I am just pleased to be out there playing 90 minutes, giving it my all and I will see what happens at the end of the season," said the defender.
* Telford officials are appealing for volunteers to help clear standing water on the pitch to ensure Saturday's game goes ahead. They should report to the Learning Centre at 10.30am tomorrow.
