John Psaras' vow despite new low for AFC Telford
AFC Telford United caretaker boss John Psaras today insisted the club is well placed to bounce back – despite slumping to an all-time Conference Premier low.
Last night's 2-1 defeat at Macclesfield meant the Bucks have now gone 26 matches without a win, equalling a non-league top flight record set by AP Leamington in 1981-82.
The latest setback, sealed by former Wolves trainee Matthew Barnes-Homer's 90th minute winner, left Telford 11 points from safety at the bottom of the Blue Square Premier table with six games of the season left.
But Psaras urged fans to look at the bigger picture after sustaining two seasons in the top flight of non-league football when the club reformed from the ashes of its predecessor Telford United in 2004.
And he believes the club is well placed to return if, as expected, they suffer the drop.
"That record has been a monkey on the back of the players, the club," said Psaras. "But having just taken over, I haven't let it bother me.
"It's not nice to be there but when I look at the club I think we should be focusing more on the positives.
"The club reformed after it went bankrupt. Fair play to Lee Carter and the directors and fans for getting the club started again eight years ago.
"Slowly the club has come back to the level where they were and this level now is 10 times harder than what it was seven or eight years ago.
"We have sustained two years of top-flight non-league football.
"It looks like we're going down this season but at least you know the mechanisms are in place for the board to pick the right manager, to get the investment and get back into this league again."
Psaras declared he was proud of his team's display last night, which saw them concede to former Shrewsbury loanee Waide Fairhurst inside three minutes.
"We started very badly again but slowly we got back in the game," he said. "We were in the game right up until the end."
The game was watched by former Hyde FC manager Gary Lowe, who has been linked with the Telford job.
