The Bucks got off to a strong start and deservedly took the lead on 17 minutes when Dwayne Samuels burst down the right and whipped in a cross to the near post that was only cleared as far as Richard Davies on the edge of the box. Davies hit a first time half-volley that few in off the first bounce.
Newport had not had a single shot on target until they drew level on 41 minutes, Danny Rose unleashing a terrific 25-yard free-kick that flew into the top corner beyond the despairing dive of keeper Ryan Young.
Telford were back in front on 57 minutes when Sean Newton scored from the penalty spot after Andy Brown was brought down by Gary Warren.
Newport lost their discipline in the last few minutes and were down to 10 men on 88 minutes when substitute Scott Rogers was sent off for an off-the-ball incident with Samuels.
Doherty then picked up a second booking two minutes into injury-time, having made an offensive comment to referee Peter Bankes.
