Alex Meechan backing AFC Telford to thrive

Striker Alex Meechan believes AFC Telford United have proved they can "do some damage" in the top flight of non-League football – despite their losing start.

The experienced forward, 31, was part of the side that lost 1-0 at Cambridge United on Tuesday in their opening Blue Square Bet Premier fixture.

Telford missed a hatful chances but, ahead of Saturday's trip to much-fancied York City, Meechan believes they have already proved they belong at this level.

"We have to pick ourselves up quickly because we know it's going to be tough at York on Saturday," said Meechan.

"I don't think there will be another game this season where we miss as many chances as we did on Tuesday.

"It was deeply frustrating, but you worry more when you are not creating the chances – and me and Andy Brown, whatever people say, are always going to create chances.

"I think we showed to whoever was watching, and especially our fans, that we are not in this division just to make up the numbers.

"We've shown we can do some damage and we've got nothing to fear."

Meanwhile, boss Andy Sinton has revealed that centre-back Stuart Whitehead is likely to miss the trip to York through illness.

Whiteheadhad to withdraw from the starting line-up just minutes before kick-off on Tuesday after being sick pitchside.

"Stuart's been to see the doctor and it's been confirmed that he's got a bug," said Sinton.

"He is a major doubt for the weekend."

Star striker Adam Proudlock, who has been struggling groin injury, is still rated at just less than 50/50 to be ready to face York.
