And, with veteran centre-back Stuart Whitehead (hamstring) and summer signing Robbie Williams (knee) both harbouring injuries ahead of the big kick-off on August 13, there could be an opening for a late signing to come in.

"I wasn't going to give game time to any more trialists at this stage of pre-season but we have a bit of an emergency in defence," said Sinton. "We don't know how long Stu or Robbie are going to be out at this stage so we have to look at our options.

"I know what Mark can offer and he was going to get a full 90 minutes last night but he got held up in a smash on the M6 so we could only bring him on at half-time.

"Curtley is athletic and he did quite well but he's a little short of match fitness.

"Gavin Caines trained with us and has a wealth of experience so we invited him in again.

"We're just having a look because of the need to assess our bumps and bruises and we might invite one or two of them back for the Chasetown game on Thursday."

Meanwhile, Sinton admits the chances of midfielder Sam Gwynne joining after his loan spell last season have receded.
