AFC Telford United have opened talks with boss Andy Sinton with a view to extending his contract at the New Bucks Head.

Sinton, who guided his side to a 5-0 thrashing of visitors Corby last night, has a deal which runs to the end of next season.

But the Bucks are eager to get the former Spurs, Wolves and England winger tied down for a longer period - and are not waiting for the outcome of the side's Blue Square Bet North promotion challenge to make their move.

"Lee (Carter, the chairman) mentioned to me last week about extending the contract," confirmed Sinton, who has been linked with Conference Premier side Cambridge in recent weeks.

"I signed a two year deal which has a year to go and with anyone who's doing well you don't want to let it go into the last year.

"Boston is a prime example of that (with joint managers Rob Scott and Paul Hurst going to Grimsby).

"I'm all ears - obviously I want it right for me but at the moment I'm very happy and I see Telford as a longer-term project.

"I'm delighted that the club have approached me. That shows they've got faith in what I've done and I can't see it being a problem."

Meanwhile, Sinton was delighted by the performance of his side last night.

The Bucks went down 3-0 at Eastwood on Saturday but bounced back in convincing fashion thanks to goals for Greg Mills (2), Andy Brown, Yannick Salem and Sean Newton.

"It shows me there's character, it shows me there's pride, it shows me there's a real determination," said Sinton.

"Let's not beat about the bush, we dipped below the standards we've set this season on Saturday.

"I wanted a reaction last night and I got one in the best possible way."

  • Telford will play a behind-closed-doors friendly tonight, with a squad of fringe players facing Midland Alliance side Rocester at the New Bucks Head.
