Sam Ricketts: Shrewsbury's upcoming fixtures hold extra spice

Sam Ricketts believes Shrewsbury’s upcoming clashes with near rivals Southend and Scunthorpe carry extra spice due to the League One standings.

Tomorrow sees 20th host 19th at Roots Hall as managerless Southend welcome Town before Scunthorpe, currently 18th, come to Montgomery Waters Meadow a week on Saturday. The Town chief feels, with just seven games and five weeks of the season left, his side’s fate will not rest on the upcoming games. Just three points separates 19th and 13th and Ricketts believes the race to avoid relegation will run on.

“You’re getting there with seven games and five weeks to go,” said Ricketts.

“It’s narrowing down but we’re still not in a situation where we could win on Saturday and it doesn’t mean we’re safe or lose and doesn’t mean you’re down. There’s still plenty to go on after this weekend regardless of the result.

“At the minute all the teams are staying together, no-one’s got themselves out of anything or cut adrift either.”

“It’s a constant strive to get those wins and see what happens.”

Back-to-back wins against the Shrimpers and Iron would take Shrewsbury to 49 points and just shy of the usual League One safety mark.

“We’re thinking the same as 10 other teams,” Ricketts added. “Every game is an opportunity to get points.

“But because we’re playing teams around us it puts a little more added on it.”

“We can only prepare and try our best and see what happens.”
