Dorrian Garner ready for Market Drayton top job

Dorrian Garner is ready to front up a new-look management team at Market Drayton following the shock resignation of Greg Clowes.

Garner will take on the top job – with club stalwart Martyn Davies assistant manager and Drayton-born former Stafford Rangers skipper Chris Flynn as player/coach – providing he has a sufficient budget to work with.

"We believe that between us we offer the blend of experience and ability to take the club forward," said Garner, who was Clowes' right-hand man in the dugout for 15 years.

"I've obviously plenty of experience in management, having worked with Greg for so long and between us we also have a great mix of contacts and knowledge of the non-league game."

But Garner reluctantly added: "All this, of course, depends on what the committee can offer in terms of a team budget.

"We fully accept budgets must be tight but there's no escaping the fact that, on present funding, another season at this level will mean another struggle."

Garner's concerns have no doubt been triggered by watching his colleague Clowes struggle to take Drayton forward once they'd effectively rescued the club from relegation.

"At Evo-Stik League level you can achieve short-term success by getting players to train and try harder and motivating greater effort.

"But you simply can't expect to perform above their norm all the time.

"Over a season, you must have enough players perform regularly at the level.

"And that, in football as anything else in this world, requires money."
