Mick Jones happy with Newport's position

Newport are ‘about right’ with their current fifth-placed position in the Salop Leisure Shropshire Premier League table, according to skipper Mick Jones.

The Granville Avenue side rose to fifth with a comprehensive 9-3 victory over Burway, leapfrogging their visitors in the process.

The division’s top four sit seven points up the pecking order and, after previously struggling to express their dominance on their home green, Jones was satisfied with the outcome.

“It was a good home win,” said Jones, who was one of just three of the Newport side on the end of a defeat.

“Without being disrespectful we should be winning these home games by nine, 10 or 11.

“But we’ve been struggling at home and haven’t been as strong as in previous years. Rain has affected that by helping the away teams.”

Jones praised the performances of Chris Grocott and Kevin Keary, who beat Mark Rogers and Peter Griffiths 21-5 and 21-6 respectively.

“We’ve got a couple of very good home players even after losing some strong players in recent years,” Jones added.

“We’re about as high as we expect. The top four sides are probably better than us.”

Elsewhere, Hanwood, in fourth, secured an 11-1 success over mid-table Bowring. Dave Burton clocked up the hosts’ best score with an 21-7 result over Reece Farr.

Second-placed Sir J Bayley beat Wem USC 11-1 while Meole Brace secured a fine 7-5 win away at Wrockwardine Wood.

Hanmer edged Chester Road, taking eight points after the pair tied 6-6, with the victors taking the aggregate score 212-208.

Leaders Castlefields secured an 8-4 win at bottom side Bylet. Paul Williams shone with a fine 21-4 success for the table-topping visitors as he downed Jamie Taylor.
