Rich Lawson eyeing hat-trick

Two county competitions are the highlights of an action-packed Bank Holiday weekend on the Shropshire bowls scene.

Telford greens will host the Shropshire Ladies-run County Mixed Doubles on Sunday with husband and wife, Mark and Emma Shore, the title holders.

And on Monday the big question is whether Shropshire and Bowring star Rich Lawson can become the first bowler to ever win the County Handicap three years in a row.

Not even greats like Dick Meyrick and Tony Poole managed that feat but Lawson, who has already qualified for this year’s County Merit finals next month, is clearly in the right form to make history on the Shrewsbury Quarry complex of greens come Monday.

He may warm up for the big day by taking part in the Wem League’s Singles Merit on Sunday at Greenfields BC from 11am when new secretary Graham Hughes will be at the helm for the first time.

The only other league competition on Sunday is the SPS Whitchurch’s Judith Purcell Mixed Doubles which starts at 11am at Chester Road.

Also that day Rob Burroughs and Jamie King – fresh from reaching the quarter-finals of the Spring Waterloo last weekend – go chasing another title in the West Midlands.

They join Hanwood’s Wayne Phillips, Dave Burton and Ashley Wellings in the hunt for a £400 first prize in the Kings Norton Masters.
