Young Town side to face AFC Telford clash

Shrewsbury Town's youngsters have been charged with reclaiming the Shropshire Senior Cup as the club juggle a hectic fixture list.

It has now been confirmed that the final, which sees Town take on arch-rivals AFC Telford United, will take place at the New Bucks Head on March 3.

The date clashes with Shrewsbury's League Two fixture at Accrington Stanley – so Town will field a youth side as they bid to wrest the trophy back from the Bucks.

Shrews chief executive Matt Williams said: "The schedules of both clubs are extremely hectic.

"The fact this final clashes with a first-team game is regrettable. It was already our intention to send a young squad.

"Our focus has to be on finishing as high as we can in the Football League and I am sure AFC Telford's focus will be on trying to retain their Conference status.

"Our club secretary has tried in vain to switch some of our central league fixtures to accommodate a suitable date.

"At no stage has it been our intention to undermine this prestigious competition – we are aware what it means to the people of Shropshire."
