And fellow Wrekin high-flyer Rhyannon Jones, who in May helped Great Britain's juniors claim team silver at the European Championships in Bulgaria, is being backed to follow in her footsteps in four years time.

Hockenhull, 17, was earlier this week named in the Welsh women's artistic gymnastics team for the Glasgow Games, which get under way on July 23.

The news marked the latest in a long line of achievements in the sport for Wrekin College and the Park Wrekin Gymnastics Club which is based at the school.

Wrekin College's director of sport, Jim Mostyn, has backed Jones, 15, to reach the same levels in the future.

He said: "It is a fantastic effort by Georgina to make the Commonwealth Games. It is fantastic and I think everyone will be watching her on television when she competes in Glasgow.

"She is going to Spain on Sunday and she will be there for much of the build up to the games in training camp.

It is a great achievement but Rhyannon was part of the team that won European silver and I would imagine if she keeps training she will probably get to the Commonwealth Games next time around."

Hockenhull will be competing in Glasgow in the all-round competition which includes the floor, beam, bar and vault.

She is one of five girls selected, alongside alongside Lizzie Beddoe, Jessica Hogg, Angel Romaeo and Raer Theaker, and is currently ranked fifth in Great Britain.

Park Wrekin coach Brett Ince will also be going to the games as well, having been selected as a coach for the Welsh team for the event.

Former pupil Cyril Thomas, won the 100 and 220 yards at the 1938 games while in 2002 Rebecca Owen won two silvers at the Manchester Games. Also, in Melbourne 2006 the school's current netball coach, Caroline Richie-Morgan, guided the Welsh netball team.
