Newport increase the gap

Newport stay top of the Shropshire Premier Bowls League table after a narrow home win over Sir John Bayley.

Scott Harries pipped Barry Guilder 21-20 in the final match to give the leaders an 8-6 victory, holding the aggregate of 20.

The visitors had held a narrow lead until the final two matches. But Mark Selley's 21-8 over Paul Evans set up the dramatic finish.

St Georges moved above Sir John Bayley into second place with an 11-3 home victory over Bylet, who are now 19 points adrift at the bottom of the table.

Alan Palin's 21-6 over Simon Madeley was their best of the evening.

Both St Georges and Sir John Bayley trail Newport by 12 points.

Castlefields' 11-3 defeat of Arch W'ton keeps them in the hunt, seven points further behind but with a game in hand. Mark Rogers' 21-5 over Dave Ridgway was a highlight.

Biggest win of the night was for Ifton, who thrashed Wrockwardine Wood 12-2. Adam Price got the ball rolling at the top with a 21-8 over Tony Garmson the best of the night for the home side.

Hadley USC were also on form, with an 11-3 home success over Bowring in mid-table.

There were also wins for Burway, over Meole Brace, and Chester Road, over Wem.
