Telford Tigers sign netminder Thomas Murdy
Telford Tigers have signed highly-rated netminder Thomas Murdy, as coach Tom Watkins looks to bolster his defensive options.
Murdy, 22, will link up with his new team-mates this week after his departure from Peterborough Phantoms in December.
The former GB Under-20s star joins a Tigers side that already boasts the netminding partnership of Declan Ryan and Sam Gospel.
But Head Coach Tom Watkins is keen to increase competition throughout his squad.
He said: "Thomas is a great guy and I am really happy that we could bring him to Telford.
"Ultimately, I want to make sure we are fully covered in all areas of the squad and it is good competition for all three netminders.
"He is coming here to be part of the squad, fit in with the guys, and try to get an opportunity to play.
"We can't assemble a team like we have and rely on just two netminders. I would rather go into something knowing we are fully covered in all areas."
Murdy posted impressive figures during a spell with Coventry Blaze in the Elite League and was part of the club's title-winning side in 2010.
He was also a regular starting netminder with Peterborough until his release, and is now keen to help Telford claim their first EPL play-off title.
"It is a really exciting time to join the Tigers and I want to be part of what they are doing," Murdy said.
"The other netminders are playing well at the moment, so hopefully I can help them in any way I can.
"I've been in the league for a few years and I know how it works. I want to play as well as I can and make sure the club picks up as many points as possible."
Wayne Scholes, CEO of Tigers owners Red Hockey and Red Touch Media, is keen to see competition in all areas of the squad.
He said: "Thomas is a very good netminder and will give Tom even more options when he is selecting the team.
"Both of our current netminders have put in truly brilliant performances this season and they will thrive off the competition.
"Here at Telford, we want to build a family of players that is ready for any eventuality. Thomas will join that family and make us even better prepared.
"I am proud of all the players we have and I want the current level of performance to continue. There is no reason why we should fear any side in the league."
