Shropshire racehorse trainer Mark Wellings has sent out his final runner.

Wellings, who is based in Bridgnorth, has left the training ranks to concentrate on a new business helping to detect minor injuries in horses before they develop more serious problems.

The handler has had around 30 winners since being granted a licence in 2000 and was a former amateur jockey and point-to-point trainer prior to that.

His final runner Cut And Thrust finished eighth of 14 in a seven furlong handicap at Lingfield yesterday.

"It's difficult to get a fairytale ending but he ran a decent race," said Wellings today.

"There is a bit of sadness at finishing training but there is also a lot of positives at what lies ahead."

Wellings has qualified as a veterinary thermographer to take digital infra-red images to help detect injuries.

"I think it will be very useful for trainers trying to detect minor injuries and get to the bottom of the puzzle of a drop in performance," he added.
