Shropshire-owned Peddlers Cross – a one-time favourite for the Arkle Trophy at the Cheltenham Festival – could have a new target come March.

After his defeat by Sprinter Sacre in the Wayward Lad Novices Chase at Kempton on Tuesday, trainer Donald McCain gave a broad hint that a step up in trip could be on the agenda.

And that means last year's runner-up in the Champion Hurdle – owned by businessman Tim Leslie who is based north of Telford – could be sent for the Jewson Novices Chase over two and half miles.

The three-mile RSA Chase has also been mentioned.

"We were going to stay on the two miles route for the rest of the season before stepping him up in trip but that might happen sooner rather later," said McCain. I will have to talk it over with the owner."

Meanwhile, Noland – like Peddlers Cross a former Festival winner – made a satisfactory return to action at Leopardstown yesterday.

The 10-year-old, owned by Cosford's John Hales, finished fifth in the 3m Grade One Lexus Chase in what was his first run since February.

Elsewhere, jockey Josh Wall – son of south Shropshire trainer Trevor – notched a festive winner at Catterick when he guided 5-2 favourite Cityar to victory in the 2m selling handicap hurdle.

And trainer James Unett, who is based at Tedsmore Hall near Oswestry – had a near miss at Wolverhampton last night when his charge Knowe Head finished second in the extended 1m 1f handicap.
