The nephew of Shropshire golfing great Ian Woosnam is set for an anxious wait to learn if he has landed his first major county title.

John Janicki, whose mother Julie is the sister of former US Masters champion Woosnam, was the leader of the Shropshire & Herefordshire Amateur Championship after the opening 18 holes yesterday.

But the tournament – which Woosnam won in 1975 – was abandoned shortly after the start of the second round in the afternoon as heavy rain finally took its toll at Llanymynech.

At the wish of the players, Shropshire & Herefordshire Union secretary Bob Davies was today contacting all clubs in the two counties in an attempt to find an alternative date and venue for the event to be re-staged.

If not, Janicki would be awarded the title for leading after 18 holes with a one-under-par round of 69.

"It's the premier event in county golf so we really want it decided over 36 holes," said competition administrator Neil Wilson.

Flooded fairways left players unable to take a drop from casual water while some holes were moved to higher parts of the green.

It is first time in living memory that the Amateur Championship has been abandoned.
