Shropshire's Ted Hankey will have to overcome a fellow former BDO world champion to reach the quarter finals of the Grand Slam of Darts for the first time.

The 42-year-old from Aqueduct in Telford, who won the world crown in 2000 and 2009, will take on 1996 world champion Steve Beaton in the second round at Wolverhampton's Civic Hall tomorrow night.

And Hankey is sure to be full of confidence after extending his 100 per cent record in the round robin group stages last night, following up victories over Wes Newton and Phil Taylor with a 5-4 triumph over Holland's Michael van Gerwen.

"I didn't play as well as I can, certainly at the start, but I came good in the end and got the win," said Hankey, who fought back from 2-0 down.

"I've got a few things to put right in my game yet but my aim was to make sure I got through the group and I've done that.

"I'm happy to get another win and happy to top the group."

Hankey bowed out at the group stage on his debut appearance in the £400,000 event last year.

He has already guaranteed himself £7,500 in prizemoney for reaching the last 16, a figure that will double should he defeat Beaton.
