From national champions in 2009 to a first stage exit in 2010 - that's the disappointing scenario Shropshire's bowlers were coming to terms with today, writes JAMES GARRISON.

The Crosfield Cup holders managed only a draw with Staffordshire yesterday in their final qualifying group two round-robin game.

Shropshire required a two chalk overall victory to pip their neighbours to a place in the semi-finals.

The away team produced an impressive display at Woodfield, going down by only 18 in a 236-218 defeat.

But Shropshire's home side managed only an 18-chalk winning margin at District in Whitchurch as their dreams of a title defence disappeared.

The only glimmer of light came with news that Potteries registered a surprise victory over Lancashire - giving Shropshire second spot in their group and a place in the Supplementary championship, the consolation event.
