Whitchurch Alport continued their proud Shropshire Challenge Cup record with a dramatic extra-time final victory over Wellington Amateurs at Shrewsbury Town's Prostar Stadium.

With the prospect of penalties looming, midfielder John Farrell volleyed home a winner for the Cheshire League Division Two outfit with just two minutes of extra time remaining.

The victory means Alport have now won the premier competition in Shropshire amateur football at least once in each of the last four decades.

"It was a fantastic night and what a way to win it," said Alport manager Andy Allmark.

"It was a very tight game which could have gone either way. But I felt we got stronger as the game went on and we were the better team in extra-time.

"It's been 11 years since we last won it and it will be nice to be able to put a few new pictures up in our clubhouse."

The first opportunity fell to Whitchurch striker Scott Thomas but his effort was well saved by Amateurs goalkeeper Steve Bray.

And it was the same story at the other end as Steve Clifford was denied by Wes Newtown in the Alport goal.

Lewis Welsh and Stuart Parnham also had half chances to break the deadlock for Wellington, while Thomas again went close for Alport.

Extra-time produced tired legs on both sides but Farrell popped up to volley home a cross from Lee Stephens.

Wellington still had the chance to level when a header from Parnham was hooked off the line by Phil Denson, but it was Alport who were able to kick off the celebrations which continued back at their Yockings Park home until 3am.

For Wellington, all attention now turns to sealing the West Midlands League division one title with victory at Wolverhampton United on Saturday.

"I thought we gave a good account of ourselves and had the better chances," said Ams boss Mike Armstrong.

"A lot of people I have spoken to felt we deserved to win it but it wasn't to be and credit goes to Whitchurch Alport.

"One of the hardest things about losing a final is watching the other team pick up the trophy.

"But the consolation for us is that we have the chance to hopefully be in that position with the league on Saturday."
