Farmer wary of champion pledges

Shropshire's Peter Farmer (pictured right) will get a chance to banish a ghost from his bowls past this weekend when he takes on the UK's best at the Champion of Champions in Blackpool.

The reigning Shropshire Merit champion heads to the seaside at the very top of his game, after a season that has seen his St Georges side clinch the Shropshire Premier League crown.

Saturday's contest will take place in front of an expected crowd of 2,000 fans at the famous Waterloo green, with a total prize pool of nearly £4,000.

Farmer finished the 2006 campaign at the top of the Premier averages - with 21 wins out of 26 games - and will be hoping to make up for a last 16 exit at last season's 'Champions' competition.

Amongst the 32 starters at 10am on Saturday will be the country's 16 county Merit champions, as well as the winners of the sport's richest tournaments.
