New kitchen on cards for Church Stretton school
A school is to get its first ever kitchen after coming up with novel solution to cut the cost of making school dinners.
Rushbury Primary School was spending thousands having meals delivered to the rural village near Church Stretton – but all that is set to change as it has struck a deal with a local catering firm to make its own on site.
A planning application will this week go before Shropshire Council's south planning committee to convert a PE store building into kitchens, recommended to be approved. Work is hoped to start on the kitchens in a matter of weeks.
Headteacher Diane Pye said it was the result of "thinking outside the box" after the school found it simply could not afford to ship in meals from St Lawrence's Primary School in Church Stretton any more.
While money has had to be raised for the kitchens, including at a recent gig by folk rockers Roving Crows, in the long term it would save and even possibly make money for the school, she said, as the kitchens will be rented out – all the while making sure pupils had nutritious meals, hot and fresh from the oven.
