This week's pictures from the past
This week's pictures from the past include the weir at Llangollen, the old railway line in Market Drayton and a street scene from Newport in 1949 when popular hero Field Marshal Montgomery came to town.
Here we have a nice view from yesteryear of the weir at Llangollen, with the handsome bridge in the near distance, and the Royal Hotel on the left.
This is a postcard, loaned to us by Diana Humphreys, of Maesbrook, and it must be about 100 years old. On close inspection you can see some wooden supports or props against the weir.
Are they still there – or was the weir being repaired, or built even?nextpage
Sally Rogers, of Lightwood Green Avenue, Audlem, has e-mailed us this picture in the hope that readers might be able to put names to faces in this group of gentlemen, who look as though they are about to leave on a day trip somewhere. The year is unknown.
"It is thought that the men in this picture are from the Audlem area," she said. "We know two definite faces, as they are family members.
"Front, second from the right, is Tom Mills and, fifth from the right on the back row, is Roland Mills, Tom's father.
"All ideas would be welcome."nextpage
The crowds were out in force in Newport in June 1949 when Monty came to town.
Field Marshal Montgomery was a popular hero. He made a short stop and went on a walkabout in the centre of Newport while on a journey from Hodnet to Lichfield.
Alighting from his car by the parish church, Lord Montgomery strolled 100 yards or so up the main street to the market square where members of ex-servicemen's organisations were drawn up in smart parade.
"Smart turnout," he complimented Mr Roger Kane, the parade marshal.

Here's the trackbed of the old railway line at Market Drayton. Although we don't have the date of the picture, it had obviously been a long time since trains had passed this way.
The bridge in the distance carried Longslow Road across the line. The whole area is a housing estate now and the bridge was demolished only a few years ago.
