This week's pictures from the past

This week's pictures from the past include a fine old view of Rodington village, staff at the old Shrewsbury Motor Garage in Dogpole and the Queens Dragoon Guards Army Cadet Force Wellington detachment in the early 1970s.

Here is a fine old view of the village of Rodington, with the village church in the distance, and the Bulls Head pub, with its prominent Wrekin Ales sign, on the right.

Just how old this picture is we don't know, but we suspect that the houses on the far left would have been relatively new when it was taken.

At your service - here is the Shrewsbury Motor Garage in Dogpole, Shrewsbury, with the staff posing for the camera. This photo, supplied by Roy Pilsbury of Shrewsbury, comes from the Greenhous archive.

Roy says this was the third premises owned by Vincent Greenhous, which moved to Shrewsbury in 1912. He says the firm moved to Dogpole in about 1915, and was there until 1921 before moving to the Greyfriars Motor Works, at St Julians Friars, its home for decades, until it moved to its modern base in Old Potts Way.

Here is Quatford Castle, near Bridgnorth, as seen in a postcard franked in Bridgnorth in 1905.

It was published by J.T. Foxall, of Bridgnorth, and the message on the back was: "Dear Father, I have arrived safely and will let you know my address later on. At present haven't got one. Hope all are well. Yours, Will."

It was posted to Mr J. Hayes, 69 Stafford Street, Walsall.

Our thanks go to our regular contributor Paul France, of Coalbrookdale, for this unusual shot with a local connection. Paul says: "This is something a little different.

"It is an old publicity shot for Nuway Manufacturing Co Ltd who were based at the old Coalport China Works from 1926 till the early 90s.

"The back of the photo reads 'Nuway 2' Squarecut link matting on loading ramps of Silver City Airways 'Bristol' Freighter. The car, a Ford Zephyr, is the winner of the 1953 Monte Carlo Rally and is disembarking at London Airport."

If you didn't get the local link, it is the rubber matting, made by Nuway. And if you can't make out what's on the bonnet of the car – it's flowers.nextpageEarly car in Lyneal

As so often, we don't have a date for this old view, showing in this instance a road in the village of Lyneal.

However, down the road there is what appears to be an early car, so the picture must be from the early 20th century.

It will not have escaped the notice of our observant readers that one of these Shropshire lads is ringed. He is a young Peter Elcock, who e-mailed us this photo, and is hoping that readers will be able to name his colleagues.

"I am the villain ringed by an irate sister! This was the Queens Dragoon Guards Army Cadet Force Wellington detachment, in 1970 to 1971," he said.

"I joined the Parachute Regiment in September 1972 and served until 2003. I now live in Worcester. For the life of me I cannot recall any other names of those in the picture."

So, if you can help, you can e-mail him at peter@green-self-storage.co.uk – or drop us a line.
