We should all look out for one another

The discourteous behaviour that exists between cyclists and motorists seems also to exist between cyclists and pedestrians.

In the Telford area, many pedestrians and cyclists are forced to share dual-purpose pathways.

As pedestrians who walk a dog, we try very hard to consider cyclists who may be approaching from behind, to ensure that our dog walks to heel, and does not stray randomly from one lane to the other, thus posing a risk to the dog and the cyclist. We would encourage any dog owner to do likewise, and to check behind them before changing lanes.

Similarly, as a pedestrian with either a dog or small children walking at our side, we would like to have similar consideration given to us as a cyclist approaches us from behind at 20mph plus. Can you please warn us that you are coming, and ring your bell, or call out, and please slow down as you pass? Many is the time that we have been passed by a speeding bike, no more than a foot away from us. It is dangerous, as the dog may move suddenly to one side, and it is also discourteous.

We have talked to the police about this, and they assure us that this matter is something which they are aware of and which also affects their own foot patrols.

We all have to use the same roads and footpaths. Would it spoil some vast eternal plan if we all considered one another?
