Canal access reopens in village after repairs
The Shropshire Union Canal has reopened in a village after being closed for about six weeks for repair and restoration work.
The Canal & River Trust has been carrying out the work at Audlem's flight of locks near Market Drayton since the start of the year.
Work carried out has included replacing the timber top lock gate as well as making repairs to the brickwork which is usually hidden below the waterline. It is part of a £43 million restoration and repair programme taking place this winter on canals and rivers across England and Wales.
The public were invited to delve behind-the-scenes of the vital repair and restoration works at an open day in Audlem last month. Visitors were given the rare opportunity to climb down inside the drained Audlem Lock 13 and walk on the bottom.
