The lorry stopped across two lanes on the corner of Chester Street at about 10am yesterday and police were called out to assist.

It caused long delays down Smithfield Road and resulted in a bus having to partially mount the pavement to squeeze past the stricken lorry.

Drivers queued down the street as they waited to go past the stricken vehicle in single file. Queues stretched back all the way to the Welsh Bridge and across into Frankwell due to the incident.

Updates about the incident were posted on the Shrewsbury Police Twitter feed, with motorists urged to pass the vehicle with caution.

The lorry was moved from the scene before lunchtime, allowing traffic to flow normally again.

The Shrewsbury Police Twitter account thanked drivers for their patience after the vehicle was cleared.
