FaceApp has apologised for this feature after accusations of 'whitewashing'
Many found that the “hot” filter lightened their skin.
FaceApp transforms your face using artificial intelligence, but one feature that promised to make you “hot” has drawn particular criticism.
Many people found that the “hot” filter actually lightened their skin.
It has been roundly criticised on Twitter.
Creator and CEO of FaceApp Yaroslav Goncharov has apologised for the feature.
He told the Guardian: “We are deeply sorry for this unquestionably serious issue.
“It is an unfortunate side-effect of the underlying neural network caused by the training set bias, not intended behaviour.”
Goncharov says that the feature is still in place, but has been renamed “spark” in an attempt to “exclude any positive connotation associated with it”.
However, the most recent update of the app didn’t contain either the “hot” or “spark” filter.
We should be able to expect a complete fix on the feature soon, but in the meantime we think we’ll stick to seeing just how wrinkly we look as an OAP.
