'Under attack': Call to fight new plans for 150 homes in Telford

Developers have unveiled plans for 150 homes in Telford – less than a mile from a plot of land earmarked for 110 properties.

Campaigners said the Muxton area is under attack from developers and are calling on residents to fight back.

Under the latest project agents acting for Seabridge Developments Ltd have lodged an outline planning application to build 150 houses off Wellington Road, along with a new access road.

It comes ahead of a public inquiry over plans to build 110 homes nearby in Muxton Lane.

About 80 people attended a public meeting at St John's Church, in Saltwells Drive, to discuss the issues.

Phil Loughlin, chairman of campaign group Opposition to the Building of More Housing in Muxton, said: "There was a huge turnout to the meeting and it was standing room only.

"Feelings are running high in the area about all these developments that we're having to campaign against. There is going to be a second public inquiry over the Gladman plans for Muxton Lane, and now this new one for 150 homes.

"This is a ridiculous situation. It seems that these areas of green space are being attacked by these builders.

"This new proposed development will have one road in and out on to Wellington Road, which is a country lane.

"Based on each of those properties having two cars, that will equate to 100,000 vehicle movements a year using a pinch point junction along a village road. There will be major traffic problems in the area if this goes ahead.

"There are 900 brownfield sites across the borough that can be utilised for residential projects ranging from one properties up to sites that can fit hundreds of new homes. We have been talking to the council and there is an attempt to get builders to take up alternative sites, but we don't think it is enough. There are ample brownfield sites out there that can be used.

"It is very important for us to raise awareness about this matter because today it is Muxton, but tomorrow it will be somewhere else in Telford & Wrekin."

He said it was important that residents submitted their objections to the council's planning office.

A fresh public inquiry is due to be held later this year or in 2017 over the Muxton Lane proposals.

Scores of residents flocked to a planning meeting held in October last year and donned T-shirts reading "Save Muxton".

The design had received 141 objections and saw 673 people sign a petition against the potential development.
