Porsche has unveiled a new version of its iconic 935 as a tribute to the classic Le Mans race car.

Limited to just 77 units, the new 935 has been called “a birthday present from Porsche Motorsport to fans all over the world” by Frank-Steffen Walliser, Porsche vice-president for motorsport and GT cars.

The 935 is based on the current-generation 911 GT2 RS road car and, as such, features a 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged engine with 690bhp sending power to the wheels via Porsche’s seven-speed PDK automatic gearbox.

The GT2 RS is capable of going from 0 to 60mph in just 2.7 seconds, so expect a similar acceleration time for the 935.

The car, which was revealed at the Rennsport Reunion at Laguna Seca in California, incorporates extensive aerodynamic touches, including a huge rear wing that mimics the original 935’s.

Six-piston aluminium monobloc racing brake callipers linked with 380mm ventilated and grooved discs provide a huge amount of stopping power too. As with the GT2 RS, the 935 also benefits from Porsche’s PSM stability management system.

Inside, there’s a carbon-fibre steering wheel, huge colour display and full safety cage system coupled with a racing bucket seat and six-point safety harness. The 935 comes with just one seat as standard, but if you want to take a passenger along for the ride then an additional seat is available as an optional extra.

Those driving the 935 in hotter climates can be thankful too, as it comes with air conditioning as standard.

Prices begin at €701,948 (circa £623,700), and deliveries are due to start in June 2019.
