A new diesel engine has been introduced to the Volkswagen T-Roc range, bringing the total number of powertrain options to five.

The new 1.6-litre unit is available to order now, with prices starting at £21,290. It sits below the T-Roc’s existing 2.0-litre diesel.

Paired up to a six-speed manual gearbox, it develops 113bhp and 250Nm of torque which is sent to the front wheels exclusively. No word yet on performance or fuel economy figures, although it has been tested to new WLTP standards — resulting in a claimed CO2 output of 115g/km.

The new diesel engine can be had in all guises of T-Roc — including S, SE, Design, SEL and R-Line trims. Standard equipment across the range includes an eight-inch infotainment display with DAB radio, while a five-star Euro NCAP rating is achieved in all models thanks to the no-extra-cost automatic emergency braking.

Range-topping R-Line models bring adaptive cruise control, satellite navigation and 19-inch alloy wheels. R-Line pricing starts £27,010 when equipped with the 1.6-litre diesel engine.

Other powertrains include a 2.0-litre diesel, which is linked to a four-wheel-drive system, while petrol engines available come in 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0-litre capacity.

The Volkswagen T-Roc is currently the entry-level VW SUV, sitting underneath the larger Tiguan and Touareg. However, a smaller T-Cross is set to be revealed later this year and will go on sale in 2019.
