Lamborghini has today confirmed that it has broken the Nurburgring lap record with its Aventador SVJ.

It achieved a time of 6mins 44:97sec around the ‘Green Hell’ beating the previous record – set by a Porsche 911 GT2 RS – by 2.27 seconds.

The V12-powered supercar features key performance touches such as Lamborghini’s active aerodynamics system and rear-wheel steering. It also wears special-developed Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres as standard, though the record-setting Aventador was shod in ultra-sticky Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres instead.

Due to these upgrades, the SVJ managed to eclipse the time set by the regular Aventador SV by just under 15 seconds.

Stefano Domenicali, Automobil Lamborghini chairman and chief executive officer, said: “The Aventador SVJ takes the Jota suffix, following the Lamborghini tradition for denoting a car’s track-focused talent. This new car is the convergence of Lamborghini technologies to produce a super sports car that transcends current performance benchmarks.

“Its tenure as the Nürburgring lap time record holder, even before its unveiling during the Monterey Car Week in California in August, endorses Lamborghini’s competence in applying superlative design engineering and ground-breaking technologies. The SVJ is a super sports car at the zenith of performance, while also ensuring unrivalled driving pleasure.”

The Aventador SVJ was piloted by official Lamborghini driver Marco Mapelli over the infamous track, who was also able to beat the previous time set by the Lamborghini Huracan Performante.
