The next McLaren Ultimate Series hypercar will be the fastest road car in the British firm’s history with a top speed in excess of the 243mph achieved by the firm’s legendary F1 road car.

Currently codenamed BP23, the new model will sit alongside the Senna in the McLaren range, but unlike that car it’ll be powered by a petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain.

McLaren has dubbed the new car a ‘hyper GT’ because it will have the frankly ludicrous performance we’ve come to expect from the firm’s road cars, but with the comfort befitting of a long-distance cruiser. McLaren says it will be the most luxurious car it has ever made.

At the announcement of the project, McLaren Automotive’s chief executive Mike Flewitt said: “BP23 will borrow the three seat layout with the central driving position made famous by the iconic McLaren F1, and it will be housed in a streamlined, shrink-wrapped carbon-fibre body of great elegance.

“We are calling BP23 a ‘Hyper-GT’ because it’s a car designed for longer journeys, but with the high levels of performance and driver engagement expected of any McLaren. A hybrid powertrain will make it one of the most powerful McLarens yet created, but the car will also deliver the highest levels of refinement, enabling significant journeys to be undertaken with up to three people aboard.”

Like the track-focussed Senna, the BP23 will get a bespoke name, rather than the alphanumerical nomenclature used by the Sports Series cars that sit lower in the McLaren range.
