A couple stepped in to pay for accommodation after they found a man sleeping rough in a garage in sub-zero temperatures.

The Good Samaritans ensured the homeless man, a familiar face in Ludlow, spent last night in a local Travelodge while other accommodation could be found.

He had sought refuge from the bitter winds and -4C (28.4F) temperatures in an empty garage close to the town centre.

Councillor Andy Boddington, who once experienced homelessness himself, said he hoped a more permanent solution could now be found.

"I had a call from a couple very concerned about a homeless man who was living in a garage.

"They took it upon themselves to pay for a room in the Travelodge for the night and the gentleman accepted the offer.

"We are now trying to get some emergency accommodation for him over the weekend."

Councillor Boddington said Shropshire Council was one of the better councils in the country for providing emergency accommodation during the winter months.

"Unfortunately not everyone who is homeless will accept the offer, for very many reasons," he said.

"Many people can not sort their minds out to deal with life."

"I myself was homeless for about a week in Shrewsbury, I know how dreadful it is and that was not in the middle of winter. I was rescued by complete strangers."

He said he could not thank the couple enough for stepping in and helping with the man in Ludlow.

Although temperatures did not drop as low as earlier in the week last night, the strong bitter winds made the 'real feel' temperature around -10C (14F).
