Firefighters rescue man from River Severn

A man was rescued from the River Severn by the fire service.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said its water rescue unit had been dispatched to the incident, near Greyfriars Bridge in Shrewsbury.

The incident took place at around 10pm last night.

A spokesman for the fire service said the man was rescued from the water by the swift water rescue team, and was left in the care of the ambulance service.

A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said the man had been taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital after being retrieved from the water.

He said: “We were called by police at 9.58pm to a patient in the water at Greyfriars Bridge in Shrewsbury.

"We sent one ambulance and a paramedic officer to the scene.

"When crews arrived, the fire service had managed to extricate the patient, a man, from the water.

"We treated him at the scene before taking him to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital on blue lights and sirens for further treatment.”
