Bunting brightens up Shrewsbury streets during lock down

You'd be forgiven for thinking it's carnival time in Shrewsbury where some streets have been decorated with streams of colourful bunting.

Neighbours of Berwick Avenue and surrounding areas have come together to put up bunting along their street

Residents in Coton Mount, Greenfields and Sutton Grange have all brightened up their area and, given we'll probably be stuck inside for a while longer, who can blame them?

The decoration is aimed at cheering people up, boosting a sense of neighbourly togetherness and being thankful for the NHS and key workers. It is an apt tribute given that the rainbow has been the symbol of solidarity through the pandemic.

Berwick Avenue has some particularly spectacular decorations, which were hung up by Chris Lewis with the help of fellow neighbours.

Resident Hayley Evans said: "We saw that other streets in the area had put some up and thought it looked really good.

"The community came together - at a distance - and put it all up. It's more to let people know you're not on your own, even though we're still locked away. It brings a bit of cheer to the street."

She added: "We all kind of knew each other before lock down but I suppose a lot of us were like ships passing in the night. But it's nice to spend that bit more time with each other now and get to know people more.

"It's been good to get people who are new to the street involved as well. And it gave people something else to do.

"It's a scary time for everybody. We're a family street and I think the kids find the lock down situation a bit daunting. This was just something to try and put a smile on people's faces."
