Police are investigating the crash, which happened off the B4380 near the Wroxeter Roman City site close to Atcham, near Shrewsbury.

The car was discovered at about 5.05am in a filed off the winding country road and the route was closed between Wroxeter and Eaton Constantine for most of yesterday morning.

The accident is believed to have happened sometime overnight between Sunday and the early hours of yesterday, although police are unsure exactly when.

Sam Cook, speaking for West Mercia Police, said: "We’re working to establish the exact time of the incident but at this time we believe it may have occurred at some time between 3am and 5.07am.

"We’d like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone who saw the vehicle in the area between these times.

"Officers believe it was a single vehicle crash.

"The vehicle was a black three door Fiat Punto. The deceased is a 28 year old woman and her next of kin has been informed."

Despite the road closure Wroxeter Roman City was open as usual with traffic diverted off the B5061 via the road by the Horseshoe Inn at Uckington.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call 101 and quote incident 69s of August 21 2017.
