Shrewsbury Food Hub serves up a treat
Local surplus food distributor The Shrewsbury Food Hub held its first ever Annual General Feast, where members celebrated the successes of the past year.
The Shrewsbury Food Hub started in April 2016 with a handful of volunteers picking up surplus food from M&S in Meole Brace and sorting and distributing it to local non-profit groups in town including the Severn Hospice, The Ark and several school breakfast clubs.
Now, 12 months later, founders Katy Anderson and Alison Thomas co-ordinate a group of over 30 volunteers who sort and deliver the food to a wide range of local groups and collect surplus food from seven stores in town including M&S, Sainsbury's and Morrison’s.
The first ever AGF (Annual General Feast) brought together Food Hub Volunteers, members of the local groups who receive food donations and representatives from the major retailers who supply the Food Hub, to celebrate and enjoy a meal made by students at SCAT from surplus food.
Katy Anderson, Food Hub co-founder said: "It’s been wonderful to get all the people that have helped to make this amazing movement happen in our town! We wanted to thank them for their support so far and share with them our plans for the future which include securing a sorting depot of our own and rolling out our ethos and methods to similar groups throughout Shropshire.”

The Shrewsbury Food Hub currently delivers to around 32 groups in the Shrewsbury area and estimate that this year we will have rescued more than 14 tonnes of surplus food from going to waste - enough for more than 33,000 meals.
